What is the Great Dismal Swamp?

The Great Dismal Swamp is 750 square miles of swampland between Norfolk, Virginia, and Elizabeth City, North Carolina, including parts of the cities of Chesapeake and Suffolk. It is home to Lake Drummond, one of two naturally occurring freshwater lakes in Virginia, The Great Dismal Swamp Wildlife Refuse, established in 1973 to protect wildlife. and historical sites of the The Great Dismal Swamp Maroons, where enslaved slaves escaped to during the American Civil War.
